Studying in the Czech Republic puts you in the middle of Europe. Though the cost of education and living expenses in Czech Republic are cheap compared to other countries like US and UK ‚it may be advisable for prospective international students to look at the Scholarship options as well.
If the foreign students decide to study in Czech, they have equal chances to get any of type of scholarship offered at particular faculty as their Czech colleagues. Depending on the rules of the faculty, those – as amended by § 91 of Act no. 111 (1998) on Higher Education – can be :
–scholarship for outstanding scholarly, scientific, research, development, artistic or other creative results contributing to the enhancement of knowledge;
–scholarship for research, development and innovation activities;
–scholarship in the case of a student’s difficult social conditions (social bursary, somewhere also a scholarship for funding the costs of living etc.);scholarship granted in other cases worthy of special consideration.
Scholarships for students taking non-Czech programmes.
Scholarships, grants and bursuries can by provided even to the students, who study in foreign language.The basic condition to gain this scholarschip is usally to be a full-time student, the others are announced by concerned faculties.
I. Scholarship Awards within the Foreign Development Assistance Programme
The Government of the Czech Republic offers to the students coming from developing countries scholarships, which are part of the framework of its Foreign Development Assistance. These scholarships support the study of these students at public institutions of higher education in the Czech Republic.These Government Scholarships cover the standard length of study for those students who:want to study Bachelor, Master or Doctoral study programmes and attend one-year preparatory course of the Czech language and other field-specific training. Applicants are usually required to pass entrance examinations at the higher education institution concerned, because this is one of the condition for getting the scholarship award;want to study follow-up Master study programmes or Doctoral study programmes with instruction in English.Scholarship applications can only be filed on-line. The scholarship application form is available at registr.dzs.cz.
Scholarship awards under bilateral or multilateral international agreements
The Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport of the Czech Republicannually offers scholarships (for study or research purposes) to foreign nationals pursuant to many bilateral intergovernmental or deparmental agreements. Applicants for gaining this scholarship are nominated by competent authority of the country concerned, where they can also lodge their scholarship applications.
Scholarships of this type are designed for university/college students or graduates and Ph.D. candidates (sometimes also for university researchers/teachers). Their study or research stay at one of the czech public institutions of higher education lasts usually from 2 to 10 months depending upon the agreement made by the Czech government and the foreign government concerned.
Most frequently, scholarship-holders are admitted for research visits (beccause thus stay does not lead to the award of a degree, they are not required to sit entrance examinations). Prospective applicants are in this case advised to contact the selected university directly and request a letter of invitation from the relevant department (this is not obligatory, but it is highly recommended).
Czech language is – in case of research or study programmes which are not conducted in Czech – not necessary, but recommended. Students who do not have adequate knowledge of Czech, a good command of English is normally required (less frequently knowledge of French or German). On the other side, those applicants, who want to apply for a study stay at a university, i.e. in a standard study programme, with tuition in the Czech language, good command of the Czech language is a condition of a successful passing of entrance examinations.
The terms of applying are different, but they are usually designed to be sent by foreign authorities (usually government agencies of eligible countries or by the Czech Embassies in those countries) to the czech Ministry by 31 March. This means, that the closing dates for applications can be determined even a few months before this date. Applicants should therefore contact the respective national authorities (usually the Ministries of Education) in time.
Foreign nationals can also apply for granting the scholarship offered by other institutions, e.g. foundations, organizations concerned with student mobility etc.
Here are some examples:
CEEPUS
The Scholarnational Visegrad Fund
The National Agency for European Educational Programmes (NAEP)
