Bridging Cultural Gaps Successfully At Turnov Medical School

It’s not easy to move to a completely new country, where people speak a  language you don’t understand, to study, work or live in.  The process of integrating with the local community and making sense of their ways and words is the hardest.

In this light, we’re happy and proud to let you know that Czech College’s Nurses Adaptation Program students are successfully integrating with the locals and officials at Turnov. Despite being new to the country and having just taken baby steps in learning the Czech language, they seem to be working really hard to blend in with the community and are performing well in academics as well.

Czech College Nurses Adaptation Program students at Turnov Medical School

The first four students had arrived to Turnov in April as part of Czech College’s one-of-its-kind Nurses Adaptation program. The program enables foreign educated nurses to practice in the Czech health care system. Hailing from completely different cultures–three of them are from India and one from Malaysia–they have held up quite well in these initial days. They are soon picking up the Czech language and are frequently moving around the small town to familiarise themselves with the local culture.

Recently, a team from the Czech College, including our President, John Xavier, Dean Elena Markova and Head of Admissions Filip Jankovský, paid them a visit to the Turnov Medical School to meet them and inquire about their progress and problems, if any. The students seemed to be happy with the program and were excited about the First-Aid Competition that was coming up soon. They are gearing up to participate in the competition, which will be held at Turnov Medical School.

Only students who hold university degrees from their home countries are eligible to participate in this integration program. The one-year program is mainly focused on learning the Czech language and understanding the culture of the region. This will help them better understand the health care system in the country and be able to secure gainful employment here. This program is aimed at solving the the widespread lack of experienced medical staff in the Czech health care system.
